CHALAZION SURGERY – Discharge Instructions

Your surgery

You have had surgery to remove a chalazion (may also be called a stye), which is a cyst or lump on the eyelid.

Specific discharge advice

• Keep eye pad on for 4 to 6 hours.
• On removing the eye pad the eyelids may be sticky. Cleanse the eyelids gently with gauze dipped in salty water as required. (Salt water recipe: add 1 teaspoon of salt to 1 litre of cooled boiled water).
• Use eye ointment as prescribed by your doctor.
• The eyelid may ooze some blood after this operation. Do not worry as this is quite common. If this happens, apply gentle pressure to the area with the palm of your hand until the bleeding stops.
• The eyelid might be slightly bruised and swollen for a few days after the operation.
• You may also experience some minor pain for a short time after the anaesthetic wears off. You can take Paracetamol (e.g. Panadol) for pain relief.
• Avoid taking Aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines (e.g. Ibuprofen) for pain relief as this can cause bleeding.
• It is recommended that you do not drive until your pad is off, and your vision returned to normal.
• Take care with steps and crossing roads.

Increase in discharge from the eye or yellow discharge
Severe pain not relieved by Paracetamol
